10 Network+ terms to know

SPAN
Mirrors traffic from ports/VLANs to a monitoring port. Used for packet capture and IDS. Cisco term - others call it port mirroring.
RADIUS
AAA protocol using UDP ports 1812 (auth) and 1813 (accounting). Centralized authentication for network access. Used with 802.1X and VPNs.
EAPoL
Encapsulates EAP over wired networks for 802.1X port-based authentication. Authenticates before granting network access.
BGP
Path vector protocol routing between autonomous systems. Uses TCP port 179. The protocol that makes the internet work. eBGP between ASes, iBGP within.
OSPF
Link-state IGP using Dijkstra's algorithm. Uses areas for scalability. Protocol 89. Metric: cost (based on bandwidth). Fast convergence.
VLAN
Logical network segment within a switch. Separates broadcast domains. Trunk ports carry multiple VLANs using 802.1Q tags. Improves security and performance.
APIPA
Auto-assigns 169.254.x.x address when DHCP fails. Link-local only - can communicate with other APIPA hosts but not beyond the local network.
STP
Cabling with metallic shielding to reduce EMI. More expensive than UTP. Requires grounding. Used in high-interference environments.
MDIX
Auto-detects and adjusts for straight-through or crossover cables. Modern switches have Auto-MDIX, eliminating crossover cable needs.
ESP
IPsec protocol providing encryption AND authentication. Uses protocol 50. Preferred over AH because it encrypts the payload.

What's in the Network+ deck

Network+ requires solid memorization of port numbers, protocols, cable types, and networking concepts. Our flashcard decks make this easy with organized categories and spaced repetition. Perfect for memorizing the technical details that make or break your exam score.

Frequently asked questions

How many port numbers do I need to memorize?
You should know at least 25-30 common ports cold (FTP, SSH, Telnet, SMTP, DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, etc). Our Port Memorization feature helps you drill these until they're automatic.
Are the flashcards updated for N10-009?
Yes! Our flashcards are aligned with the latest N10-009 exam objectives, including cloud networking and modern wireless standards.
Should I study flashcards before or after practice questions?
Start with flashcards to build foundational knowledge, then use practice questions to apply concepts. Return to flashcards for any terms you didn't recognize in questions.
How do I remember all the cable types?
Our cable flashcards include visual hints and real-world use cases. Associating cables with scenarios (Cat6 in offices, fiber between buildings) helps retention.
